The ADA recommends that you visit your dentist twice a year for a routine checkup and cleaning This simple appointment removes dangerous tartar from your teeth while also cleaning them. The checkup is also an essential tool for early detection of conditions like gum disease and oral cancer.
The first stage of the checkup includes a basic cleaning. The hygienist will use a variety of tools to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and along the gums. Tartar can be very hard for you to remove at home and left unchecked can lead to serious issues like tooth decay and gum disease.
The hygienist will keep an eye out for any possible signs of tooth decay or other problems. Be sure to let them know if you have any issues or concerns about a particular tooth.
Once the tartar has been removed and your teeth are flossed the hygienist will polish your teeth. If you have issues with stains on your teeth this is a good time to ask your hygienist about your tooth whitening options.
During the second stage of the appointment, your dentist will then check your teeth and gums for any signs of decay or gum disease. They will then perform a basic oral cancer screening, checking your tongue, throat, face, head and neck looking for any signs of infection, swelling or cancer.
